Alma Finch

Alma Florence Armstrong Finch was born on March 18, 1913, in McNairy County, Tennessee to Virgil Eugene and Margaret Victoria Armstrong. Alma attended school at Rockwell where she played basketball. On August 1, 1936 Alma married Floy Lee Finch in Hillsboro, TX. They celebrated sixty-one years of marriage before he preceded her in death on April 10, 1998. Alma received her Texas State Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologist License in September of 1936. Perms were 75 cents and haircuts were 25 cents. She also worked at the carpet plant, sewing room and Martin McDonald's in Hillsboro. She enjoyed baking, sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, and flower gardening. Alma was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hillsboro, Texas. She lived her life in devotion to God and her family and set a Christian example for her children and grandchildren. She was a quite, gentle, caring and kind woman. She always said if you couldn't say anything nice about someone, don't say anything at all. Alma grew up in the days when you went to the field when it was dark and waited for daylight to start work. She helped with the farming by plowing with a mule. A horse and buggy took them where they needed to go. She saw electricity come to their home and much later a telephone. Water was finally piped into the house instead of having to get it from the well and drink out of a bucket with a dipper. Finally outdoor toilets went to indoor bathrooms. She washed clothes on a washboard; then to a ringer washing machine and later to an automatic. Wood stoves were exchanged for gas ones. Hot water was finally in the house when hot water heaters became available. Cars were also on the scene by now. She saw the airplane invented and men put on the moon and traveling in space. The ice man delivered a block of ice to your house every day or so, until electric refrigerators. Computers, microwaves and dishwashers came to be; although she never owned a dishwasher. So many changes she saw in her lifetime. Alma is survived by son Billy Gene Finch and wife Jane of Waco, daughter Laginia Margaret Baker and husband, Gerald of Clifton and daughter Joann Underwood and husband Doyle of Malakoff, Tx. Grandchildren are Teresa Campbell and husband John of Granbury, Yvonne Anz and husband, Roger of West, Tamlyn Ray Baker and wife Johna of Frisco. Julia Wero and husband Chris of Erie, Co. , Sonia Hill and husband , Mike of Virginia Beach, Va. Melissa Willis and husband, Troy of Mesquite, Tx. and Russell Underwood of Dallas. Great grandchildren are Preston Anz, Taylor Campbell, Tanner Campbell, Ashley Anz , Jacob Arie, Michael Hill, William Hill, Marianna Hill, Britney Arie, Gavin Baker, Jackson Baker. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Preceding her in death were her father and mother, Virgil Eugene and Margaret Victoria Armstrong of Guys, Tenn., brothers William Arlis Armstrong of Little Rock, Ark., James Armstrong of Vilonia, Ark., Robert Elmer Armstrong of Dallas and sisters Mary Etta Lipford of Ramer, Tn., Ella Mae Chapman of Grandview, Arbie Victoria Tarrant, Rienzi, Miss., Eva Odessa Harris, Decatur, Tx. and Erma Lee Moore, Guys, Tn.
