Alton Hightower

Alton B. Hightower, 97, of Hillsboro passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 23, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Paul Clark of Walnut Street Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 PM, Sunday at the funeral home.

Alton was born on August 12, 1917 in Hillsboro to William P. and Cora Lee (Cantrell) Hightower. He grew up in Hillsboro and graduated from Hillsboro High School. At the age of 16, he began a 42 year career with Texas Power and Light. On June 2, 1944, Alton and Martha Carter were united in marriage in Waxahachie. The couple later moved to Waco for 31 years before returning home to Hillsboro.

Alton was a dedicated member of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Hillsboro. He was also a member of Hillsboro Masonic Lodge #196 AF & AM. Among his many interests, he loved to hunt, collect and make arrowheads. His collection numbered 1500 arrowheads at one time. In addition, he was also a talented wood carver and builder, having built three houses in Hillsboro by himself. In his youth, he was quite an avid water skier.

Following his retirement, he and Martha enjoyed traveling the United States and Canada together, especially in Oregon and California. When they were home, he took pleasure working in his yard. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Martha Hightower of Hillsboro and several nieces and nephews.
