Annie Thomas Brooks, 97, of Hillsboro passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.


Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Gary Kreder officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from Noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday prior to the service.


Annie was born on April 16, 1913 in Aquilla the daughter of Nathaniel Joshua David and Nellie (Kirkpatrick) Thomas. On July 15, 1933 she married Bascom Morrison Brooks and he preceded her in death on September 30, 1973.


Annies great-great grandfather, Wm. Hawthorne Kirkpatrick brought his family to what is now Hill County in 1849. He and his family were some of the first settlers in the county. He and his two sons, James R. Kirkpatrick, and Wm. Pinkney Kirkpatrick were three of the seventeen who voted to organize Hill County. His youngest son, A. Y. Kirkpatrick wrote a book giving the only eye witness account of the early days of Hill County. Also, her great grandparents, Elizabeth Epps Feazel Hatcher and Henry Poore settled in Hill County in 1869.


Also preceding her in death were her parents, four brothers, three sisters, a granddaughter and a great-grandson.


Survivors include five children, Johnnie Brooks and wife, Edith, Peggy Brooks, and Larry Brooks all of Dallas, Joan Hopkins and husband, Jerry, of Waco, and Jerry Brooks of Fort Worth; brother, Billy Thomas of Arlington; sister, Erma Morgan of Whitney; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; fifteen great-great grandchildren.
