Barbara Gregory

Barbara McIlroy Harper Gregory, 90, of Hillsboro passed away Monday afternoon, June 6, 2016, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 10, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Danny Gilliam officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.

Born on March 1, 1926 on the family farm in Hill County, Barbara was the daughter of S. B. and Linna (Hooker) McIlroy. She was a graduate of Abbott High School and received her bachelor’s degree from East Texas State University in Commerce in 1946. In 1964, she earned her master’s degree from Baylor University in Waco.

She married Malcolm Harper in 1946. For 30 years, she taught at schools in La Joya, Clifton, Marlin, Mt. Calm and Hillsboro before her retirement in 1986.

A dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro, she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of Hillsboro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Hillsboro Kiwanis Club, and served on the board of the United Way.

On December 13, 1989, she married Jack Gregory. He preceded her in death on April 26, 2006. Also preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Ralph McIlroy.

Survivors include her children, Malcolm Harper, Jr. and wife, Deborah, of Buda, Kay Hunnicutt and husband, John, of McAllen, Jan Ford of Hillsboro and Samuel Harper and wife, Cathy, of Silsbee; grandchildren, Michael Schockley, Amanda Mitchell, Jill Wenzel, Carl Harper, Andy Harper, Miranda Boddie, Mollie Ford, Mary Mezzles and Megan Ford; and great-grandchildren, Briana, Hayley, Lynna, Leila, Luke and Austin. She is also survived by a brother, James Roland McIlroy, of Celina and one cousin, Estaline Cartwright, of Abbott.
