It is with great sadness that the family of Betty DeWitt announces her peaceful passing on Thursday November 1, 2018, at the age of 87 years. Mrs. DeWitt was a longtime resident of Hillsboro and member of the First United Methodist Church. Betty was closely tied with the Church, which included upbringing at the Waco Methodist Home and singing in the Church Choir for over 50 years. Her family will hold a Memorial service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church on Elm Street in Hillsboro, Texas.
Betty was born on May 18, 1931, on a small farm in Miles, Texas. She was the daughter of Robert and Mabel Harris and was one of five children. Betty graduated from Waco High School in 1948 and attended 4C Business College. On November 4, 1949, she was united in marriage with David Augustus DeWitt in Waco. The couple relocated to Pecos in 1950, where David began coaching. They welcomed three beautiful daughters before returning to Hillsboro in 1953. For many years Betty ran an efficient household while David coached middle school and high school. Upon his retirement in 1984 the close couple took on a series of self-starter projects that they found fulfilling. They also enjoyed spending quality time with their grandchildren and took several family vacations. Betty enjoyed working in her yard every day. Her passion and skill showed. Her yard became a sanctuary for animals and Mrs. DeWitt cared for several stray cats and injured birds over the years. Betty also had a remarkable interest in genealogy and she would often share the history and stories of her family with pride.
Betty was preceded in passing by her husband, David DeWitt, in 2009, and recently by her sister, Jerry Schumann.
She is survived by her daughters, Jan Sims (Hillsboro), Lynn Carpenter and husband Joe (Waco), and Diane Mikulecky and husband Joel (Granbury), and by her loving granddaughters, Patty Newman (Frisco), Sandy Sims Diaz and husband Jeremy (Corinth), and Krys Sims Evensen and husband Joey (Alaska), as well as by her three great granddaughters, Trinity Garcia, Sara Diaz, and Honor Evensen.
Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 673, Hillsboro, Texas 76645 or to Paw Pals, P.O. Box 1533, Hillsboro, Texas 76645.
