Betty Orvig, age 84, of Whitney passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, July 7, 2018 in Whitney. The family will hold memorial services will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Whitney with Pastor Philip Wottrich officiating.
Born in Rolla, Missouri on July 18, 1933, Betty grew up in both Missouri and Kansas before settling in Austin. While there, she graduated from Central Texas Beauty College earning her cosmetology license. That began a more than sixty year career as a hairdresser and stylist. It was also in Austin where she met John C. Orvig, Jr., whom she wed on May 21, 1953 in Belton. The couple settled in the Fort Worth area for a number of years before moving to Whitney in the late 1960's.
During her career in Whitney, Betty had two beauty salons of her own and also worked at other salons. She was also a talented artist, working in both oils and water colors. In her earlier years, she enjoyed boating and fishing, as well as playing bridge with her friends. She was long-time member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Whitney.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Ada Isabelle Ryno; her husband, John, in 2012; a son, Norman Dale “Bubba” Orvig, in 1974; and two brothers, Ronnie and Dale Ryno. Her survivors include a son, Johnnie C. Orvig and wife, Mona, of Hillsboro; a sister, Shirley Stephens and husband, Fred, of Glendale, OR; two sisters-in-law, Ursula Ryno of O’Fallon, MO and Brenda Ryno of Cuba, MO; special friend, Darla Schaffer; as well as a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Country Club Retirement Center for the care and attention afforded Betty during her time with them.
