Billy Joe Kendrick, 88, of Hillsboro, passed away on January 29, 2021, in Hillsboro. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro with Mr. Ryan Mangum officiating. Mr. Kendrick will lie in state from noon to 7:00 pm, Monday, February 1, 2021, at Marshall & Marshall in Hillsboro.
Billy was born on January 18, 1933, to Willie Spurgeon and Josey Bell (Lipsey) Kendrick. He grew up in Hillsboro and attended Hillsboro schools. As a young boy he had several jobs which included delivering newspapers, delivering milk for Davis Dairy, working for Carr’s Service Station, and delivering ice for the plant. In 1950 Billy began work with the city of Hillsboro as a meter reader and continued until 1953 when he was drafted by the United States Army to serve during the Korean Conflict. During his military service he was stationed in Fair Banks, Alaska, and Fort Bliss before being honorably discharged in 1955. After his military service Billy moved back to Hillsboro. He was united in marriage to Barbara Dell Springer on October 22, 1955, in Hillsboro. He began working for the city again and worked until August of 1961, at which time he went to work for Certain-Teed until his retirement in 1990. When Billy retired, he quickly realized retirement was not his cup of tea, so he went to work for Hill College in the maintenance department for several years. In his spare time Billy enjoyed quail hunting, his bird dogs, and gardening. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Josey Kendrick, his daughter Theresa Basye, brother Maurice Kendrick, and two sisters Frances Thompson and Maydelle Sawyer.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Barbara Kendrick, daughter Donna Dollar and husband Jack, and son in law Mike Basye; grandchildren, Brad Basye and wife Shelbi, Allison Nivens and husband Kyle, and Jacob James Dollar; great-grand children Kaleb Nivens and Beau Basye; and sister Nell Bigham.
Memorials can be made to Alzheimer’s Texas, 7719 Wood Hollow Drive, Austin, TX 78731.
The family would like to say thank you to James Earhart and Homestead of Hillsboro for all the love and care they have shown during this time.
