Billy Ray McCreight, 54, of Hillsboro passed away Thursday June 19, 2014, in Whitney. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2014 at the Whitney High School Gym with Rev. Larry Zabcik officiating. Burial will follow at Peoria Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.
Billy was born May 11, 1960 in Hillsboro to Johnny and Dorothy (Vanderpool) McCreight. He grew up in Hillsboro and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1978. He went on to attend Hill College and received his B.B.A. in Accounting from Texas A&M University in 1982. After a short business career, Billy started teaching and coaching. Billy began his coaching career while he was still in college, coaching the Pizza Hut little league team with his brother Jerry in 1979–1981. He continued coaching Hillsboro summer league ball until the mid 1990’s. Coach McCreight’s first paid coaching job was at Hillsboro ISD, where he coached Hillsboro High School’s first girls’ softball team. He taught and coached in Hillsboro from 1994–1997. He then moved to Connally ISD where he taught and coached from 1998–1999. He made his final move to Whitney ISD in 2000 where he taught and coached for 14 years coaching volleyball, softball, track and cross-country. Billy also enjoyed bass fishing and watching sporting events. He especially enjoyed watching his Texas Rangers or Dallas Cowboys whenever he could. Billy was happiest watching his students participate in sporting events. He treated every one of them like they were his own.
Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his two brothers, John McCreight and wife, Cindy, of Waco and Jerry McCreight and wife, Christy, of Arlington; sister, Linda Chilton and husband, Ben, of Hillsboro; nieces and nephews, Lauren McCreight, Taryn Crabill and husband Frank, Ashley Chilton, Kenny McCreight, Mark McCreight, Ryan Chilton and wife Megan, Matt Chilton and wife Monica, Jerrett McCreight and Kevin McCreight; four great-nephews, Landon Crabill, Lucas Crabill, Levi Crabill, and Brayden Chilton; two aunts, Dora Anderson and Gloria Holden; one uncle, Otis Vanderpool and wife, Barbara; and too many cousins to list.
