Billy Ray was born September 12, 1936 in Littlefield to Luther James and Leona (Gleason) Sutton. He met the love of his life, Joan Malone in Dallas. Joan and a friend had a flat tire and Bill and a friend stopped to change the tire for them. He left the scene saying, “I’m gonna marry that girl someday”– and that he did! On May 24, 1956, they were united in marriage. Bill and Joan went into business for themselves by opening a service station. They owned a car wash and a used car business; they then moved on to the cattle business where the couple worked side by side throughout the years. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before her death on July 1, 2016.
Also preceding him in death were his parents and seven siblings. Survivors include his daughter, Phyllis Kay Gibson and husband, Roy, of Greenville; two sisters, Pauline Bryant of Pampa and Nellie McCollum of Washington, PA; grandson, Phillip Key of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, P. O. Box 96280, Washington, DC 20077.
