Bobby Cooper

Bobby D. Cooper, 74, of Milford returned to his heavenly home on Monday, October 24, 2017, after a short illness following a stroke. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October, 27, 2017, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Steven Gilley officiating. Burial will follow at New Woodbury Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 26, at the funeral home. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in Jesus Christ supported him and gave him peace. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is back with his creator.

He was born to the late Charlie and Weata (Napps) Cooper in Hillsboro on April 29, 1943, raised in the Woodbury community, and was the 7th of eight children. He was a doting and responsible son and enjoyed spending time with his large family.

Bobby proudly served his country in the early 1960's. He joined the United States Navy in 1961 and was stationed in various locations, most notably in the Las Vegas area where he met and married his wife of 54 years, Lela (Nelson) Cooper. He was honorably discharged in 1964 after serving his remaining time at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After leaving the Navy, they made their home in Milford.

He had a love of carpentry and in 1970 started his own company as a building contractor. His favorite type of job was to remodel and restore old homes. He had a knack for solving complex problems and was an amazing mathematician. He was unfailingly kind and generous, but notably a man of few words.

Bobby gladly and honorably served his community of Milford for well over 20 years. He was a volunteer fire fighter from the early 1970's until the mid 1990's and volunteered as a Milford Reserve Peace Officer in the early 1980's. He was elected to the City Council from 1976-1982 and again in 2012-2014. He was also elected to serve as Mayor for Milford from 1982-1996.

He is survived by his wife, Lela; two sons, Dennis Cooper of Dallas and John Cooper of McKinney; daughter, Karen Cooper of Milford; three granddaughters, Rowan Cooper, Regan Cooper, and Jamie Jackson; sister, Ella Sisco of Hillsboro; brother, Roy Cooper of Ivanhoe; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers, Bill, Ray, Troy, Roland, and Joe Cooper.

Memorials may be made to the New Woodbury Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 1527, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
