Carlton Thomas Evans

Carlton Evans, 72, of Whitney, went home to his Savior on Saturday, June 8, 2024 in Dallas.  Carlton was born on March 15, 1952 in Greenville, Texas, the son of Iva Lee Crowe.  He grew up with his brother, Jackie, in Oak Cliff and graduated from Adamson High School.  Carlton played football, basketball and loved art.  He studied art in college and toured Europe as he attended art school in the 70s.  He attended Grace Temple Baptist Church in Oak Cliff, where he met the love of his life, Gwen.  They married on July 7, 1973.  During their 42 years of marriage, they were a devoted couple and raised two children, Matt Evans and Carla Evans Cain.  His proudest role being that of Papa to his five grandchildren: Avery, Abby, Jackson, Ava and Axton.

Carlton served 33 years as a Dallas Firefighter, spending the bulk of his career at stations 15s and 23s.  Not only was he proud to serve the community where he was raised, he found a brotherhood of his peers.  Carlton is known as the station chef, where he penny pinched and cut coupons to cook his signature meals.

Carlton was an active member of Whitney Fellowship.  He was proud of the church and its service to the greater Whitney community.  As a founding member of the church, he organized logistics for the building, weekly trips for church supplies and looked forward to cooking breakfast for Whitney High School athletes each Friday.  He bled blue for Whitney sports after both his children played while attending Whitney schools, then running chains for decades at home Whitney High School games.

Carlton is survived by his son-Matt Evans and wife, Julie; his daughter-Carla Cain and husband, Tony; grandchildren-Avery, Abby, Jackson, Ava and Axton; in-laws Maurice and Peggy Davis, sisters-in-law Beverly Adams and her husband, Bruce and Janet Graham, nephews-Patrick Allen, Jarrett Adams, Nick Adams, Zac Graham and niece, Amy Whitmire; and “adopted son” Thomas Thomasen of Denmark.  He was preceded in death by his wife-Gwen; mother-Iva Lee Crowe; brother-Jackie Evans and sister-in-law, Rita Baker.

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 15 at 11:00am at the Open Range Cowboy Church in Whitney.  Memorials may be made to the Whitney Fellowship, 101 N. Brazos St., Whitney TX 76692 or to Alliance For Children, www.allianceforchildren.org , 3609 Marquita Dr, Fort Worth TX 76116.
