Carmen was born July 19, 1925 in Tampa, Florida. On November 10, 1946, she was united in marriage to Mark Butler, Jr. He preceded her in death on December 2, 1979. Also preceding her in death were her mother, Angelina (Guarino) Valenti; step-father, Joseph Valenti; youngest son, Joseph Mark Butler; son-in-law, Bruce Kuykendall; two sisters, Angie McFarland and Josephine Franco; and two brothers, Tony Valenti and Frank Valenti.
Carmen was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She was so full of life. In her younger years, she was very much a fashion plate. She was a perfectionist in everything she did. She was an excellent cook, who made great pies, and was also a great seamstress, who could sew any piece of clothing. A licensed cosmetologist, Carmen enjoyed fixing hair for her clients and working with her colleagues.
In 1977, she and her husband were called to go work with the Manuelito Navajo Children’s Home in Gallup, New Mexico. She was a foster mother to ten children. After 10 years of serving there, she moved to Denton to take care of her youngest granddaughter. One of her greatest pleasures and joys in life was her three granddaughters and great-grandchildren, who always brought a smile to her face. For 28 years, she was a resident of Denton. She was a member of Singing Oaks Church of Christ in Denton and College Hill Church of Christ in Hillsboro. Carmen loved her Lord and served him faithfully.
Survivors include her children, Billie Kuykendall; Don Butler and wife, Kathy; three granddaughters, Angela Boyd and husband, Tim; Jennifer Woods and husband, Kelly; and April Lyons and husband, Jordan; five great-grandchildren, Larissa Boyd; Hunter Woods and Heath Woods; Gemma Lyons and Cecilia Lyons; sister, Rose Baxley; brother, Joseph Valenti; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Manuelito Navajo Children’s Home, P. O. Box 58, Gallup, NM 87305.
