Carolyn Diane Meek (Coursey), 75, passed away on November 2, 2024, with her loving husband, Wayne, by her side.
A visitation will take place on Friday, November 8, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Home, 201 N Bosque in Whitney, Texas. The graveside service will follow the visitation at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Cemetery, County Road 124 5, Whitney, Texas. A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, November 30 at a time and location to be announced at a later date.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas on November 21, 1948 to James (Jake) Coursey and Billie Martin, Carolyn hails from humble beginnings, growing up in North Richland Hills, Texas. Carolyn and her younger brother Doug had a quintessentially Texan upbringing, spending hot summer days outside with neighborhood kids, playing croquet, having water balloon fights, enjoying family barbecues, and basking in the very special treat of icy cold snow cones from the local market.
With roots firmly planted in North Richland Hills, Carolyn started and raised her family in the very same house where she grew up. As a single mom, she worked tirelessly to provide for her two children, Jason and Shannon. She even worked multiple jobs at times so that she could give her children all they needed and treat them with nice things whenever she could. While being a mother was always her most important job, she had a career in accounting for over 40 years, working for various oil & gas companies.
It was through her job at Meridian Oil in downtown Fort Worth that she first met Wayne, her future husband. Wayne took notice of Carolyn and her daily habit of enjoying a Diet Coke and warm chocolate chip cookie. He overcame his shyness and finally talked to her. A 28-year relationship was put into motion when Wayne brought Carolyn a Diet Coke and warm cookie. He says, “It was the best ninety cents I ever spent.” They were married in Costa Mesa, California on Labor Day weekend in 1996.
Carolyn, a woman of strong faith, was an active member of Granbury Chapel Bible Church where she gathered and worshiped with her beloved community and joyfully participated in her women’s bible study group at which she proudly read for an hour on National Prayer Day. Carolyn also supported and volunteered through her church, bringing meals to the elderly who couldn’t feed themselves and also to caregivers.
A passionate gardener, she took great pride in tending to her plants and sharing details with friends and family about what she was growing and picking. Carolyn’s daughter Shannon remembers her enthusiastically sharing details of her cantaloupe and watermelon plants during their phone conversations. She also enjoyed reading, swimming, and painting.
While Carolyn was known to be a consummate southern woman – proper, fiercely loyal, and always “done up” for an outing, she had an adventurous streak and zest for life that drove her to travel, explore, and try new things. She was known to drive two or more hours in pursuit of the perfect latte or just to try a new restaurant. But no matter where Carolyn’s travels and life experiences took her, including living in Oklahoma and California, she remained true to her Texas roots… even enjoying a Diet Dr. Pepper as her last drink.
Carolyn will be remembered as a proud, loving, and deeply devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and member of her family, a generous and thoughtful friend (with a knack for giving perfect gifts), and a kind, selfless woman with a Texas-sized heart. For these traits and many more, she will be tremendously missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Billie and Jake, and her infant son, Bryan.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Wayne Meek; her brother, Doug Coursey; her two children, Jason Mayer and Shannon Bergeron, and their respective spouses, Julie and Norm; her four grandchildren, Ali, Sam, Caleb, and Isabella; Wayne’s children, Trey Meek and Damon Meek, and Damon’s wife, Maria; Wayne’s three grandchildren, Maddison, Preston, and Molly; and countless others whom she loved and who loved her along the way.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation (www.epilepsy.com).
