Chester Nelson Smith, Jr., of Whitney, passed passed quietly from this life at age 88 on December 23, 2018, which was his oldest son’s birthday who passed away in July 2018. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney with Dr. Carl Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service.
Chester was born April 11, 1930 to Chester Nelson and Susie Loren (MacDowel) Smith, Sr., in Anna Rose, Texas, the oldest of six chldren. Of those, he is survived by only his youngest sister, Lois Jean Grams of Austin. He lived most of his young life in Falfurrias, Texas and graduated from Falfurrias High School. He briefly attended what was then the University of Corpus Christi (which later became the University of Kingsland). He worked for Falfurrias Creamery, and then moved to Fort Stockton, Texas and went to work in the late 1950's for Standard Oil of Indiana as part of the seismograph crew for a number of years. Later, he went to work for
TransWestern Pipeline Co., a natural gas refining plant, from which he retired.
He love the Lord, and being bilingual in Spanish, he went on numerous mission trips to Mexico from Fort Stockton. Later, he made mission trips to Honduras from Whitney. A Sunday school teacher in his dearly loved church, First Baptist of Whitney, Texas, he also did supply preaching periodically in area churches.
In 1949, he married Gloria Walk Smith, with whom he had five children, Terri Langen (Dan) of Flint, Texas, Charlotte Wilson (now deceased) of Whitney, son-in-law, Lawrence (Bud) Wilson of Whitney, April Holden of Whitney, Marshall Nelson Smith (now deceased) of Deer Park, Texas, and Kevin Scott Smith (Kay) of Montgomery, Texas.
In 1981, he married Carolyn Slaton Smith of Odessa and gained three more daughters: Kathy McDaniel (Steve) of Odessa, Cindy Spring of Whitney (formerly of Odessa), and Elizabeth Riddle (Mike) of Gatesville, TX.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother and three sisters, daughter Charlotte, son Marshall, son-in-law, John Holden; granddaughter Summer Holden and a grandson, Tommy Joe Holden.
He leaves to cherish his memory his six children and their spouses, 19 grandchildren and spouses, and 33 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and “adopted” family members and friends.
