Clyde Ford Nowlin, 88, passed away March 28, 2015, in Hillsboro, Texas. He was born April 13, 1926 in Temple, Texas to James Radford and Ethel Ford Nowlin. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Edward Sumrall officiating. Burial will follow at Brandon Cemetery in Brandon. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the funeral home.
Clyde grew up in the Arnott Community, Hill County, and completed his first 8 years of school there. He then attended Hillsboro High and went on to Hillsboro Junior College for a year before enlisting in the Reserve Corp of the Army to be called to duty as soon as he turned 18. He was assigned to the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group with the Air Force and worked on P-51s in Germany. His squadron later received the first American jets, P-80s, to go to the European Theater.
Upon his return to the States, Clyde enrolled again in Hillsboro Junior College and there met Barbara “Bubbles” Smith. They were married in Bynum on August 21, 1947. He graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1950. His love for Texas A&M was passed on to his family. He was especially proud when a son and 2 granddaughters graduated from A&M.
He farmed near Bynum and also spent 10 years working for Niagara Chemical as a sales representative. He was involved in his community with 52 years of service in Rotary and 49 years as a director of the Hill County-Blackland Soil & Water Conservation District. He was the first recipient of the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Farm Family of the Year Award in 1984. Clyde was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Bynum, a member of Texas A&M Century Club since 1974 and a charter member of the Aggie Club beginning in 1967.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bubbles Nowlin; his brother, R.L. Nowlin of Brookings, Oregon; one daughter, Sheila Knox and husband, Bob, of San Angelo; sons, Ronnie and wife, Lesa, of Bynum, Donnie and wife, Paula, of Elm Mott, and Kennie and wife, Jennifer, of Whitney. He had 10 grandchildren, Wendy Foltz, Chris Schronk, Taylor Weatherby, Liza Nowlin, Jackson Nowlin, Diane Nowlin, Amanda Holobaugh, Amy Morris, Elisa Brantly and Bethany Reid. He also is survived by 10 great-grandchildren.
