Dan Allen Curlee, 80, of Whitney, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 of complications from a heroic battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney, Burial will follow at 2:00 pm at Mart Cemetery in Mart. A visitation will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at the funeral home in Whitney.
Dan was born on September 20, 1940 in Ben Her, Texas to Artis and Louise Curlee. He transferred to Mart his first year in high school and help pave the way for the Mart Panthers who have the reputation as one of the most winning football teams in their division in the state of Texas. This is something he was very proud of throughout his life. After high school he went on to earn a degree in business from Sam Houston State University. He taught himself to be an auctioneer and received his license and went on to win 1st runner up in the State Championship in the 80’s. Growing up around the furniture business he incorporated furniture sales with auctioneering and pioneered a new trend in Texas. This quickly caught on and Dan became well known for his skills throughout the state.
In 1994 Dan and his wife Sheila moved to the Whitney area and opened a retail furniture store, after many years of hard work and dedication they became one of the largest retail furniture dealers between Waco and Ft. Worth and west of the I-35 corridor. Dan was also known for his charity auctions for those in need.
Preceding Dan in death were his beloved father and mother Artis and Louise Curlee, former spouse, Sue; sister, Wrenna Faye Phleps, brother-in-law, Eddie Phelps.
Dan is survived by his wife, Sheila of 31, years; daughters, Cheryl Lawrence of Dallas, Celeste Curlee (Adam Block) of Plano, Lisa Spillman (Joe) of Irving; son-in-Law, Bill Lawrence of Dallas; stepson, Rick Pinyan of Ft. Worth; grandsons, Ridge, Piercen and Hunter Lawrence of Dallas; step- grandchildren, Ricky, Rachel, Ryan, Sarah, Lacy and Jesse; sister, Kathleen Clancy (David) of Mexia and many extended family members.
