David Gibbs

David J. Gibbs, 67, of Hillsboro passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011, at Homestead Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Mr. Jeffery Arnell officiating. Burial will follow at Simpson Cemetery near Kokomo, Texas.

David was born in Gorman, Texas on April 14, 1944. He was drafted into the Army in 1963 during the Vietnam War, and was stationed at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York. In 1967 he was honorably discharged on 100% disability. He married Maisie Margaret Westley of Kota, Rajasthan, India, who he met in New York's Central Park. They moved to Weatherford, Texas in 1970 and resided there with their two daughters, Lisa and Christie for 16 years.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with diabetes and the resulting kidney failure it caused. Despite constant pain, he hardly ever complained. He was cheeful and grateful to all around him until the end.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Samuel Preston and Mary Magdaline (Shugart) Gibbs.

Survivors include his brother, Max Gibbs; sister-in-law, LaVerne Gibbs; nephew, Gregory Gibbs; sister, Majorie Elaine (Gibbs) Henry; brother-in-law, Harry Henry; nephew, Leon Thomas; daughter, Mary Lisa (Gibbs) Owen; son-in-law, Kevin Owen; daughter, Christie Tessa (Gibbs) Arnell; son-in-law, Jeffery Arnell; and three grandchildren, Marlie, Macaden, and Payton Arnell.

Special thanks is given to the staffs at Hollister's Assisted Living, Homestead Nursing Home, and Bridgeway Hospice.
