David Overton

Retired Air Force Colonel, David Overton, DDS, 60, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013 at his residence in San Antonio, Texas. A memorial service will be held for David on Saturday, May 4, at 2:00 PM at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.
A separate memorial service will be held at a later date at the Texas University Dental School in San Antonio.

David was born on July 23, 1952 in Whitney. He grew up in Whitney and during high school he worked at the Whitney hospital. He graduated from Whitney High School, Stephen F. Austin University, and the Texas University Dental School in San Antonio before entering the U.S. Air Force as a dentist. He served in the Air Force for 22 years and a part of that time he was stationed in Japan.

In June of 1974 he married Mary Raye in San Antonio.

Following retirement he moved back to his wife’s home town of San Antonio and at the time of his death he was serving as an associate professor of dentistry at the Texas University Dental School in San Antonio. David enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. The University of Texas Dental School has set up a golf tournament and the trophy will be named THE OVERTON CUP in David’s honor.

David was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Smith Overton in 1975.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary; one son, John Overton of San Antonio; his father, Charles Overton and step-mother Eileen of Whitney; two brothers, Jeff Overton and wife, Ruth of Jasper and Steve Overton of Whitney. Two step-brothers, Maynard Sharrow and wife Donna, and Mike Sharrow and wife Kim; two step-sisters, Nancy Ridlehuber and husband David and Tricia Ashcraft and husband Steve, all of Whitney and numerous extended family members.
