Sonny loved to keep up with sports and enjoyed visiting with anyone about all sports. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro, where he led the Golden Ages Singing Group, sang in the Adult Choir, was a deacon, and served on the Lord's Supper Committee and Brotherhood program for many years. During his time at Town Hall, he also enjoyed leading singing there.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Kaye Cheatham; three brothers, Alvin, Elzie, and G. W. Stanford; five sisters, Adelle Nance, Bobbie Stanford, Ludelle Curry, Mozelle Davison, and Nadine Lentz.

Survivors include his son, Keith Stanford and wife, Deborah, of Whitney; son-in-law, Jimmy Cheatham of Taylor; two grandchildren, David Stanford of Pasadena, CA and Susan Stanford of Dallas; and a number of nieces and nephews.
