Dell Overton

Dell “Big Mama” Overton, 96, of Prairie Valley, passed away on March 8, 2016 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2016, at Prairie Valley Baptist Church in Whitney, under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors. Bro. Phil Digby will be officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Valley Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., on Thursday, March 10, at the funeral home.

Dell was born on August 14, 1919, in the Prairie Valley Community of Hill County, to Joe and Viva Mae (Worley) Booth. She was born, reared, and lived in the Prairie Valley Community her entire life. She was a farmer, a rancher, a seamstress and even a shade tree mechanic. In fact, if she put her mind to it, there wasn’t anything she couldn’t accomplish.

On March 3, 1939, she married Hurchel Overton in Whitney and they were married for 53 years before he passed away.

Her favorite pastimes were playing marbles, painting sewing, and traveling. But, her passions were her grandchildren and spending time with her family. A life-long member of Prairie Valley Baptist Church, she loved her Lord and Savior with all her heart.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, and a son, Jerry Don Overton, Sr., as well as all seven of her siblings.

Survivors include her children, daughter, Marguerite Newell and husband, Butch of Prairie Valley and daughter Judy Digby and husband, Phil of Wichita Falls; grandchildren, Ray Dan Hancock, Sherri Hancock and Mark Hancock and wife, Alice all of Prairie Valley, Randy Overton and wife, Carolyn of Waxahachie, Yolanda Lynn Overton of Peoria, Jerry Don Overton, Jr., of Prairie Valley, Chris Digby and wife, Paulette and Brad Digby and wife, Tressa, and Gina Wilson, all of Wichita Falls and an adopted grandson, David Vance of Wichita Falls.

Other survivors include great-grandchildren: Chase Hancock and Cody Clinard of Whitney, Brandy Doyle and husband, Troy of Aledo, Derek Overton of Waxahachie, Ashley Digby, Bradley Digby and Sarah Digby, all of Wichita Falls, Alison Ringo and husband, Trent, of Virginia, with a very special I love you and thank you to her for the loving compassion and care of “Big Mama” over the last several months, and, Lindsey Riffe and husband, Jason, and Garrett Vance, all of Weatherford, Matt Edmondson, Malarie Edmondson, both of Dallas; and ten great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many other loving relatives, friends and church family members.

Dell never met a stranger. If you met her, you were her friend for life. If she knew you, she loved you.

Memorials may be made to Texas Home Health Hospice, 8300 Central Park Dr., Suite A, Waco, TX 76712 or Prairie Valley Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1668, Whitney, Texas 76692.
