Dick Rush McMahan, 86, of Whitney, passed away on December 18, 2017, in Whitney. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 23, 2017, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney with Rev. Brad Slaten of King Memorial United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 on Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service. He will lie in state from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Dick was born on July 25, 1931, in Whitney, to Walter and Susan (Rush) McMahan. He grew up in Whitney, graduating from Whitney High School in 1949 before going to Tarleton State University before finishing his bachelor’s degree in health at North Texas State University.
On August 4, 1951, he married Peggye Ann Basham in Whitney. From November 14, 1953 until November 13, 1955, he served his country in the United States Air Force. After his Air Force duty, he moved back to Whitney and took a job with the State of Texas as an agriculture inspector in Abilene. He then worked for Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company in Midland before transferring to Dallas in 1966. In 1974, he decided to go back to nursing school and received his nursing degree from Brookhaven College in Dallas working in Dallas as a nurse until 1993 when he retired and he and Peggye returned to Whitney.
Dick enjoyed flying, playing the guitar, photography and was a professional photographer as a side job. A self-published author, he wrote a book about Bonnie and Clyde.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife, Peggye Anne McMahan on December 30, 2013.
Survivors include Patrick McMahan and wife, Robin of Whitney and Kevin McMahan and wife, Sandy of Cransfills Gap; grandchildren, Ethan McMahan and wife, Megan of Monmouth, OR, Brandon McMahan of Waco, and Christopher McMahan and wife, Katie of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren, Hadley McMahan and Isla McMahan of Monmouth, OR and Nora McMahan of Denver CO.
