Don Maples

Don Maples, 70, of Mertens passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Grady Cashion of First Baptist Church in Blooming Grove officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery near Mertens. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at the funeral home.

Don was born April 19, 1945 in Ellis County to Richard A. and Viola (Reynolds) Maples. For 42 years, he was employed with Owens Corning Fiberglass Plant in Waxahachie, retiring in 2008. While working there, he was the captain of the ERT Team for 28 years. On January 15, 1969, he was united in marriage to Linda Thornton in Hillsboro. An avid gardener, Don enjoyed working in his yard and especially tending to his flowers. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, and taking cruises. For over 20 years, he served as the Fire Chief of the Merten’s Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mertens. Don loved his family very much, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Marlene Drinning.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Linda Maples of Mertens; daughter, Joyce Rodriguez and husband, Luis, of Mertens; two sisters, Geraldene Jenkins of Waxahachie and Vivian Brotherton of Richardson; three grandchildren, Ashley Arnett and husband, Chris, Anna Rodriguez, and Austin Rodriguez, all of Mertens; four great-grandchildren, Caiden, Coleman, Lexi, and Cameron Arnett, all of Mertens; special friends, F. L. and Ann Upchurch of Hillsboro; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
