Donald Houston Reed, 75, of Hillsboro passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2013, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Brother Leonard Lewis and Brother Matthew Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Salado Cemetery in Salado. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the funeral home.
Donald was born February 21, 1938 in Temple to Wallace Houston and Vera (Scudder) Reed. He grew up in Holland and graduated from Holland High School in 1956. For two years, he attended Tarleton State University on an athletic scholarship. After graduating from Texas A&M in 1960 with his bachelors degree, Donald joined the United States Army. He married Shirley Matejowsky.
He worked in the United States Soil Conservation Service for the Department of Agriculture for many years, from which he retired. For 15 of those years, Donald was the district conservationist in the Hillsboro office. A member of Covenant Baptist Church in Hillsboro, he was involved in many church activities. He was also a member of Rotary Club. Donald enjoyed spending time with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Mary Emma Reed; niece, Catherine Rector; and brother-in-law, Lawrence Petrie.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Reed of Hillsboro; daughter, Amber Cordell and husband, Ralph, of Hillsboro; two sisters, Lucille Dayton and husband, Charlie, of Hico and Roberta Petrie of Holland; many nieces and nephews; close friends; and church family.
