Dorothy Gerik, 86, of Whitney, passed away on June 18, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 23, 2016, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney. Burial will follow at Fatima Cemetery in Abbott. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at the funeral home.
Dorothy was born on August 10, 1929, near Abbott, to Joe D. and Mary (Kolar) Pustejovsky and was raised there. In 1946, she graduated from Abbott High School and attended Hillsboro Jr. College before transferring to Texas Technological College (Texas Tech University). During her time there, she met and began dating Edwin Gerik. On July 24, 1950, they were married.
She graduated from Texas Tech with a B.S. degree in 1950 and taught English and Homemaking at Megargel High School in Megargel, Texas. She also taught English and Homemaking at Aquilla High School in Aquilla, Texas for several years before becoming a full-time homemaker and mother. In 1959, the family moved to Whitney.
Dorothy was a devout Christian and very active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hillsboro. For many years she served the church as a Sunday school teacher, lay minister and by leading and participating in bible study groups.
A very giving person, she loved cooking and preparing meals for large family gatherings. Throughout her life she maintained a love for reading, particularly books and articles involving religion and politics.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Edwin J. Gerik; her parents; a brother, Dan Pustejovsky; a sister, Marcella “Babe” Kittock; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Gerik; and many other beloved relatives.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Thomas Gerik and wife, Rachel of Temple, Loretta Eubank of Corpus Christi, Edwin (Snooky) Gerik, Jr. and wife, Dianna of Waxahachie, Ken Gerik and wife, Debbie of Whitney and Dr. Jeffrey Gerik and wife Caryl Anne of Waco; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Kazda and husband, Richard of Fort Worth; and many other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
