Doug Conaway

Doug Conaway, 87, of Hillsboro passed away Tuesday night, June 6, 2017, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Larry Zabcik officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, at the funeral home.

Born November 27, 1929 in Brandon, Doug was the son of Bryant Wesley and Virginia Mozelle (Orfield) Conaway. He grew up in Brandon, graduated from Hillsboro High School, and attended Hill Junior College. Doug was a 1951 All American football player in the Southwest Conference while attending TCU and played in the 1952 Cotton Bowl. On November 1, 1952, he was united in marriage to Francine Frank. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree from TCU, he was drafted by the Washington Redskins.

Following his service in the United States Army, Doug received his Masters degree from Baylor University. He spent four years teaching and coaching before going to work at the United States Post Office for 25 years, retiring in 1985. An avid sportsman, he loved to hunt and fish. Doug was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro and Hill County Fishing and Hunting Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Francine Conaway of Hillsboro; three children, Sue McClure and husband, Billy, of Hillsboro, Doug Conaway, Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Belton, and Frank Conaway of Abbott; three grandchildren, Becky Forman and husband, Matt, Patrick McClure and wife, Jenelle, and Bryant Conaway; five great-grandchildren, Madison Forman, Makenzie Forman, Benjamin Forman, Mason McClure, and Maddox McClure; and other family members.
