Edith (McClung) Wiley, more affectionately known as “Nanny” or “Aunt Edie,” to her family members, was 100 years young of Hillsboro, Texas, and peacefully passed away in New Braunfels, Texas on October 3, 2023. Edie was born in Hillsboro in 1923 to Lee and Virginia McClung. She grew up on her Texas family farm with her five siblings – Raymond, Harold, Francis, Burhl, and Jenelle (Nell) McClung.
To Edie, family and friends meant everything, and she always put her loved ones first. She demonstrated this regularly by cooking for the neighborhood kids, chatting with her friends on their daily walks, organizing community car washes to raise money for kids camping trips, or simply rocking her cranky little loved ones to sleep while singing the tune to "a bushel and a peck".
Edie was able to travel the world, saw many beautiful places, and meet people from all walks of life. She appreciated everything she had; as growing up during the Great Depression will do that to you. Edie married her late ex-husband, Troy Wiley Jr., and she embarked on a journey overseas during the very disconcerting times of WWII. While being stationed in France they began to start their family and enthusiastically adopted their first daughter Sheryl Wiley Wilson in Germany. To their surprise within the next year, they welcomed their second daughter, Sandra Wiley Everly. Edie went on to see her family grow throughout the years to four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was always so incredibly proud of her entire family.
Edie was an active member of the Church of Christ. She had many friends in the congregation and when she could no longer make it to the church, you could hear her singing along to her favorite songs while watching the sermon on TV. The countless hours of stories that she would share would always leave you in awe, no matter how many times she told them, as they would get better and better each time… She was adoring, thoughtful and kindhearted, and we will forever miss her delicious meals, immense storytelling abilities, ferocious tenacity, and every moment that she brought warmth and love into all the lives that she was a part of for the last century.
Edie is survived by her sister, Janelle (Nell) McClung Barrow; her daughter, Sandra Everly; her grandchildren, Brenda Baker, Brian Hough (Kristen Hough), Melanie Register (Christopher von Bretch), Shelby Everly; her great-grandchildren, Chevy Everly, Collins Hough, Raymond Barry, Sara Dorsey (Joe Dorsey), Cameron Gotchock (Mia Gotchock), Kaela Reisner, Lilly Register, Logan Register; her great-great-grandchild, Mateo Gotchock. Many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins also survived her.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Texas. We hope to see you as we celebrate Edie’s life.
