Edna Pearl Piel Markwardt, 81, of Hillsboro was called to her eternal home by her Lord on Thursday evening, April 17, 2008, at Providence Health Care Center in Waco. Pearl was born January 22, 1927 in Malone, Texas the fourth child born to Herman T. and Johanna Jennie Radke Piel. She was baptized into the Christian faith at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Walling, TX, on February 20, 1927 by Rev. E. O. Baack and her sponsors were Albert Piel, Martha Zettler, and Alma Baack. She confirmed her faith at St. Peter on April 6, 1941 by Rev. R. H. Wenzel. Her confirmation verse was Romans 1:16, I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also the Greek. Pearl married Ben Markwardt on April 26, 1947 at Salem Lutheran Church in Malone and he preceded her in death on February 1, 1999. Two children were born of this union, a son, Vernon, and a daughter, Cynthia. Her Lord, her family, and her friends were her life. Pearl was a very active member in her church, Christ Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. She was a loving spouse and companion to Ben for 51 years, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a caring friend to many. She was a tissue donor. Also preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Wilton Piel and Robert Piel; and a sister, Eddie Mae Maas. Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law, Vernon & Janice Markwardt of Itasca; a daughter & son-in-law, Cynthia & Buster Maass of Malone; two grandsons, Brian Markwardt and wife, Staci, of Weatherford and Eric Markwardt and wife, Kendra, of Itasca; and four great-grandchildren, Aaron, Katie, and Austin Markwardt of Weatherford and Ryan Markwardt of Itasca; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church Kitchen Fund, 915 Corsicana Hwy., Hillsboro, TX 76645.
