Eleanor was the daughter of Henry J. and Elsie Byars Armstrong. At an early age she moved to Texas and grew up in Maypearl on the family farm. On January 27, 1944, she married James Richard "Jim" Strickland. He preceded her in death September 19, 2001. They lived in Houston for many years before settling in Hillsboro in 1984. For 25 years, Eleanor worked as a nurse at Hermann Hospital in Houston. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro where she was very active in her Sunday School class and was an enthusiastic participant in the church quilting group. Eleanor was an avid gardener and enjoyed caring for her lawn and landscaping. She was also a member of the Hillsboro Business and Professional Women's Club. Also preceding her in death were her brother, James Armstrong and a grandson, Chris Ryan. Survivors include: two children: Jean Pope and husband Bryant of Enfield, Conn., Ellen White and husband Bob of Houston; five brothers and sisters: Margaret Hinson and husband James of Cleburne, Sue Opry of Garland, Bob Armstrong and wife Carol of Elkhart, Rudy Armstrong and wife Joyce of Gun Barrel City, and Judy Marion and husband Jerry of Maypearl; Step-grandchildren: Ashley Seagraves, Shannon White, Matthew White and wife Margo and great-granddaughter Reese; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church; P.O. Box 673; Hillsboro, TX 76645
