Ernest (Ernie) Lewis Goerdel Jr., a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather passed away on July 22, 2013 in Mansfield. Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM, Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro with Mr. Jeff Evenson officiating. Visitation and viewing will be from 5:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Ernie was born on December 13, 1934 in Hamilton County, Texas to Paula Edna and Ernest Lewis Goerdel, Sr. He was the third child of four and preceded in death by his sister, Ella May Reddick.

Ernie served honorably in the U.S. Army and received marksman (rifle) and good conduct medals. He went on to achieve a BS in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Arlington and became an engineer for aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin for over 33 years. He retired in March of 1999.

Ernie’s sincerity and calm demeanor brought peace to anyone around him and his subtle humor and wit was infectious. We will all miss him, the sparkle in his eyes, the goodness in his heart and the love for his family and friends.

Ernie is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, and beloved family, sons-Michael Goerdel, Russell Cooper and Steve Jaggars and daughters-Beth Evenson and Bobbie Miller. He is also survived by his brother, Alvin Goerdel of Dalworthington Gardens and sister, Carol Hall of Arlington. He is also blessed with an extended family of nieces and nephews, 7 grandsons, 3 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
