Floy B. (Pyburn) Basye, 89, of Hillsboro, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2024. Graveside services will take place at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Blanton Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.
Born April 12, 1934, to Lester and Bertha Mae (Jones) Pyburn, in Comanche, Texas, she was united in marriage on January 28, 1950, to Eugene (Gene) Basye. Together, they raised four sons and two daughters.
Floy enjoyed gardening, cooking and sharing God’s word. She took particular delight in the many family gatherings over the years, especially the Easter egg hunts. Her greatest life lesson was obeying the Gospel, and her treasured accomplishment was earning her G.E.D. in 1992. Floy, “Nanny,” struggled with dementia for the last two years. In order to test her memory and make her mind function, she turned to an old game she had enjoyed years before, dominoes. Counting numbers on those “bones” came naturally for her and she had the pleasure of laying down 10, 15 and 30 points at a time while playing against her daughter, Nell. Floy often commented, “well ain’t it funny how those dominoes come out that way?” …until Nell would turn the tables once in a blue moon. Floy could block like no one’s business! Additionally, she was amazed by what Nell had on that little phone of hers, all the songs and hymns they listened to while playing. She did not know who Google was, but she knew Nell could consult that feller and get an answer. During this time, her family learned what her favorite scriptures and hymns were. Floy read Psalm 25 every day and often read Psalm 23:4 and Psalm 39:13. The hymns heard on her tribute video were her favorites.
Her eldest son, Gary, lived with her for the past several years and did what he could while struggling with Parkinson’s disease. They grew remarkably close and counted on each other. Floy slipped and fell last September and cracked vertebrae in her lower back which resulted in her needing to be in a nursing home. Floy always asked about Gary. She knew he was sick but did not realize how sick he actually was until later. Gary’s disease progressed quickly, and he contracted pneumonia and Covid, ending up in the hospital and eventually, the nursing home. His daughter, Jennifer Ellison, attended to Gary at both the hospital and nursing home. Gary passed away February 1, 2024, only nine days before his mom. Floy was devastated, but she knew it was just and race to the “finish line” for them both. She was ready to be with the Lord on February 10, 2024. Floy passed in her sleep and was kept comfortable by the staff at Homestead Nursing Home in Hillsboro. The family will always appreciate what they did for their mom/ ”Nanny” and are thankful to the Lord for blessing them with such a wonderful mom/ ”Nanny.”
Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; sons, Gary and John Basye; daughter-in-law, Theresa Basye; son-in-law, Danny Farquhar; sister, Louise Hines; and brother-in-law, Jack Hines, Floy is survived by her sons, Michael Lester Basye and Kevin Paul Basye and his wife, Lori; her daughters, Cathy Jean Farquhar and Floy Nell Erwin and her husband, Steve Erwin; her daughter-in-law, Melinda Basye; her sister, Pat Owens and her husband, Aubrey Owens; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
