Mary Frances Overton Briggs, 97, was born on November 10, 1913 and passed away on March 27, 2011 at The Wesleyan at Scenic Drive in Georgetown, Texas. She was one of 13 children born to Charlie and Monte Overton in Prairie Valley, Texas. At a young age she moved to the nearby town of Whitney. She began her working career at the First National Bank in Whitney. There she met and married Marvin Briggs in September 1934. After her marriage, she opened her own business, Briggs Insurance Agency in downtown, which she operated for the next 25 years. During this time, she had three daughters. She was a lifetime member of The Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #930 where she served as Worthy Matron. She was also instrumental in getting the charter for the Rainbow Girls Assembly and served as Mother Advisor for several years.
After selling her insurance agency, she began a new career in Real Estate in both Dallas and Houston; however, her love for Whitney brought her back home. She has been a member of Our Lady of the Lake Episcopal Church for many years.
She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her three daughters, Treon Kirby of Carrolton, Eileen Kissinger and husband Donald and Lucretia Biscomb and husband David of Georgetown, 9 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Her cheerful and optimistic attitude was a joy and inspiration to our family and she will be dearly missed by all of us.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Lake Episcopal Church, PO Box 5555, Laguna Park, Texas 76644 or Charity of One’s Choice.
