Fred Johnson, 83, of Hillsboro passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2015, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Vernon Martindale officiating. Burial will follow at Peoria Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 22, 2015, at the funeral home.
Born May 10, 1931 in Bynum, he was the son of Jim and Stella (Watson) Johnson. On June 25, 1948, he married Ovella Watson in Hillsboro and she preceded him in death on June 28, 1996. He later married Nita Woodruff on December 19, 1998 in Abbott. He was a farmer and rancher most all of his life. An avid fisherman, Fred also enjoyed raising and taking care of his cattle. He was a member of the Abbott Baptist Church in Abbott.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; son-in-law, Dan Beam; four sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Nita Johnson of Hillsboro; two daughters, Carolyn Schaffer and husband, Tom, and Beverly Beam, all of Hillsboro; sister, Frances Craig of Hillsboro; four grandchildren, Daniel Beam and wife, Stacy, of Itasca, Ashley Ross of Blooming Grove, Shane Schaffer and wife, Jennifer, of Round Rock, and Chad Schaffer and wife, Maranda, of Brownwood; nine great-grandchildren; and his pet companion, Jack.
