Glenda Walker

Glenda Ruth Hammonds Walker, 78, of Caldwell passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014, in Caldwell. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro with Rev. Wade Yarbro of Cedar Creek Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Glenda was born August 21, 1935 in Thalia, Texas to O.C. and Lena Hammonds. She met her husband, W.L. Walker while attending school in Odell. They often joked that he was looking out the high school window while she was jumping rope in elementary. W.L. was drafted to the Korean War where he was wounded and returned stateside. He attended a game at Odell High where Glenda was cheering and that was the beginning of a 56 year marriage.

After the death of their first child, Fonda, they moved to Fort Worth where Glenda attended Cosmetology School. She worked several years until their daughter, Rhonda, was born. About this time two laymen from Southwayside Baptist Church visited and led them to the Lord. This church nurtured Glenda’s lifelong love for teaching preschoolers. Warren and Kevin were born in the years that followed.

When W.L. surrendered to preach, Glenda was his loyal supporter, typist and prayer warrior (as well as wrangler of their kids). They served the Lord together at Thorp Springs Baptist Church, First Baptist-Jewett, First Baptist-Whitney and Cedar Creek Baptist in Huron. Through many years Glenda taught preschoolers on Sundays and GA’s on Monday. She loved going to GA camp! Glenda worked about 20 years in early childhood centers, training up children in the way they should go.

Glenda and W.L. also opened a successful plant nursery in Whitney. This provided new opportunities to plant seeds for the Lord’s kingdom until the business burned. Then family and friends built a new home for them where the smell of Glenda’s homemade bread often greeted you at the door.

Glenda was preceeded in death by her parents; husband, W.L., in 2009; her son, Kevin, in 2010; daughter, Fonda, in 1954; and sister, Margrete Rich. She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda and husband, James Hadley, of Caldwell; her son, Warren Walker and wife, Kelley, of Arlington; her daughter-in-law Julie Walker McLelland of Monument, Colorado; as well as six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by five siblings, Bob Hammonds, Clem Mays, Marie Brock, Lonnie Hammonds, and Janell Farmer.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist School, P. O. Box 687, Caldwell, TX 77836.
