Helen Nelson

Helen Katherine Nelson, 90, of Burleson passed away Sunday morning at Huguley Hospital in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro. Burial will follow at Peoria Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM, Wednesday, at the funeral home prior to the service.

On February 7, 1924, Helen was born in Peoria to Lonnie and Mary Elizabeth (Jameson) Pope. She spent most of her early years in Hill County until moving to Fort Worth in 1962. Shortly thereafter, she began work as a line worker for what would become Colonial Cafeteria and advanced to cafeteria supervisor before her retirement to Burleson in 1984, after twenty years of service. Beginning in 1990, she lived with her daughter, Janice, in Burleson.

Helen was devoted to her family. She especially enjoyed being a caretaker for her great-grandchildren. She was also an enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers fan. For the last few weeks, she had delighted in playing bingo and socializing with her fellow residents at the Huguley Nursing Center in Burleson. Helen was of the Methodist faith.

Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Carolyn Ashmore; two sons, Harold Dean and Larry Don Nelson; and six siblings, James Pope, Homer Pope, Mary Nell Ward, Mildred Tune, Alvin Pope, and Ray Pope. She is survived by four children, Judy Lee and husband, Pete, of Whitney, Beth Wright and husband, Mike, of Burleson, Janice Trammel and partner, Scott, of Burleson, and Randy Nelson and partner, Lu Anne, of Houston; brother, Les Pope of Lafayette, LA; sister-in-law, Shirley Pope of Hillsboro; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
