Helen Terry

Helen Dunn Terry, 91, of Whitney, passed away on November 2, 2016. Funeral services under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the Open Range Cowboy Church. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Helen was born on June 28, 1925, in the Towash community, to Johnny and Hassie (Taylor) Wiley. She grew up in Whitney and lived there most of her life.

She was known as “Nana” by most of the community. After her passion for Christ, Nana’s greatest love was for her family - both through blood and through love.

If you had questions about the past, she was your resource. She knew everyone’s birthday and phone numbers, and usually had a story to go with it. She was an artist and her paintings are cherished by many. Known as an excellent cook, she was recognized as “Cook of the Month” by the Waco Tribune Herald. In fact, her cherry cobbler recently raised more than $1000 for charity.

A dietitian, she worked at Whitney Hospital for more than thirty-five years.
She was of the Baptist faith and was baptized in Towash Creek near Whitney.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband, Walter Dunn; her second husband, Eugene Terry; and two step-grandsons.

Survivors include her children, Ricky Dunn and wife, Glenda, of Laguna Park, Johnny Dunn and wife, Paula also of Laguna Park, Nathan Dunn and wife, Susan of Point Blank, and Tammie Sharp of Whitney, Paulette Scott and husband Jerell of China Spring, Janet McCartney and husband, Larry Joe of Ghloson, Doris Dillon and husband, Danny of Garland and Norman Terry and wife, Linda of West; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Laura Nell Ward and Lula Bell Crawford, both of Whitney; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a Proverbs 31 woman who was an example for everyone who crossed her path.
One her last entries into her journal was, “Lord, lead me on for the rest of my life. Let me be a light to lead others that don’t know you.”
