Ike Henry Moore passed away on June 25, 2024 at Homestead Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Henry was born on November 29, 1943 at Boyd Sanitarium in Hillsboro to Ike and Elizabeth (Knight) Moore. He was raised in Hillsboro by his grandmother Winnie Knight after the separate deaths of both his mother and father before Henry reached the age of two. During the summer months throughout his childhood, Henry would travel by bus to Uvalde, Texas to visit his paternal grandmother, Sallie Jefferson Moore, and cousins in the Uvalde area.
Henry was a 1961 graduate of Hillsboro High School and attended The University of Texas, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1967. He continued his education by receiving his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law and practiced law in Hillsboro for many years.
In addition to helping clients solve legal matters, Henry was dedicated to his community by holding several elected positions, including Mayor of Hillsboro for 14 years from 1987 to 2001. During the 1970s, he was part of a contingent of Hill County residents that met with Washington D.C. lawmakers to secure federal funding for the creation of the Aquilla Water Supply District, which has since provided a reliable water source to Hill County and the surrounding areas. He continued his leadership with the Aquilla Water Supply District by serving on its Board of Directors and then as the water district’s attorney for over 40 years.
Additional boards and organizations that Henry served on include Meals on Wheels Waco, Hill Regional Hospital, Hillsboro Heritage League, Hillsboro Main Street, Lions Club, State Bar of Texas District Grievance Committee, Hill County Bar Association, and Heart of Texas Council of Governments. On more than one occasion, Henry graciously made his childhood home available to the Hillsboro Heritage League Tour of Homes, which provided Henry an opportunity to proudly display the house that had been in his family since 1898, as well as the backyard English garden that he meticulously designed and groomed.
As a result of his deep family roots in Hillsboro, Henry was a life-long member of the First Methodist Church in Hillsboro. An avid golfer, he would often return with a humorous story from his frequent golf trips or marshaling duties at tournaments. Bridge would eventually replace golf as his passion, and he could be found at a bridge table multiple times a week.
Henry was a voracious reader and compiled an extensive personal library of books he had read and planned to read. He also loved to travel and planned detailed itineraries of places to visit and explore at stops along the way to his destination. Often friends accepted his invitations to accompany him on these adventures.
Whether it is on the golf course, at the bridge table, on his back patio enjoying a refreshment, or at a restaurant having a nice meal, Henry will be missed by his many friends who simply called him “H”.
Memorials may be made to the Hill College Foundation, P.O. Box 819, Hillsboro, TX 76645 or First Methodist Church, P.O. Box 673, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
A memorial service to celebrate Henry’s life will be held at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro on August 3, 2024, at 10:00am.
