Hugh Earvin Mathis

Hugh Earvin Mathis, 81, of Springtown passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019, at a Forth Worth hospital.  Military graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2019, at Hillcrest Garden of Memory with Dr. Hal Kinkeade of First Baptist Church of Springtown officiating.  Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Monday, September 30, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Hugh was born December 2, 1937, in Crowell, Ford County, Texas to Carol Craford and Ruby (Trammell) Mathis.  He graduated from Quanah High School, Quanah, TX in 1956.  He also attended West Texas State University.

On December 13, 1957, Hugh enlisted in the United States Army, 97th Signal Battalion, doing basic training at Ft. Carson, CO and later was stationed at Ft. Garden, GA and Stuttgart, Germany.  His rank was Spec 4 and he was Honorably Discharged on December 4, 1959.

For 38 years, beginning in 1967, he worked for Frito Lay in Fort Worth, retiring in 2005.  He also worked for a short period of time at The Reporter Newspaper before moving to Springtown in June, 2008 to help his son open Canyon Lighting, Etc, LLC., where he worked until his death.

On December 7, 1973, Hugh was united in marriage to the love of his life and best friend, Gloria Jones, in Hillsboro.

Hugh was saved at an early age and was a member of Acme Baptist Church in Acme, TX.

In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and loved playing with his little dog, Ki. Hugh was a friend to everyone. He loved playing pranks and joking with people and had nicknames for everyone.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Sandra Riley of Quanah.

He is survived and will be missed by the love of his life and best friend of 45 years, Gloria Mathis of Springtown; children, Brent Mathis and wife, Michele, of Springtown, Amanda Tekell and husband, Ronny of Tyler; grandchildren, Dylan Mathis and Shannon Bailey of Springtown; Emily Tekell and Justin Tekell of Tyler; two sisters, Rue Eaton and husband, Dale, of Quanah and Carolyn Anderson of Dallas; brother-in-law, Gerald Riley of Quanah; mother-n-law, Thelma Jones of Springtown; several nieces and a nephew; and his best buddy, Ki.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 500 North Main, Springtown, TX 76082 or Hill County Paw Pals, P. O. Box 1533, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
