Irene Rodda, 101, of Whitney, passed away on February 1, 2017, at Hill Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, at First Baptist Church of Whitney with Dr. Carl Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Whitney Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Irene was born on November 28, 1915, in Thorp, Wisconsin, to Matt and Ethel (Walihao) Kujala.
On August 20, 1936, she married Glen Rodda in Neillsville, Wisconsin and he preceded her in death on February 2, 1970. She moved to Whitney in February of 1947 from Brazoria. For several years, she worked in the kitchen in both a nursing home in Hillsboro and Grant Buie Hosptial. She also worked in sewing rooms in both Hillsboro and Whitney.
She enjoyed quilting, reading and gardening in her spare time. For 70 years she has been a very faithful and active member of First Baptist Church in Whitney.
Preceding her in death were her parents; an infant son, James Rodda in 1939; a daughter, Ruth Kestner on April 12, 2007; a son, William Rodda in August 2005; two grandsons, JerryKestner and James Kestner; two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her children, Joann Volker and husband, Kenneth of Schertz, Mary Ann Payne and husband, Hubert of Whitney, Judy Statham and husband, Allan of Whitney; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends; and her loving pet companion, “Pup”.
