Jack W. Smith, 79, of Hillsboro died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Lutheran Sunset Home in Clifton. Jack was born September 18, 1930 in Port Arthur, TX, the son of Veal and Winnie Smith, where he grew up and graduated from school. On September 17, 1949 he married Verda Fontenot. In 1964 he received his bachelors degree in speech and drama from East Texas Baptist University and went on to receive his masters degree from Texas Christian University in 1966. He started his teaching career at Missouri Baptist College and ended it at Hill College after 25 years. Jack was active in civic affairs, serving on the Heritage League board and was an interested participant in many other civic activities. A man of many talents, he co-authored A Salute To Hill County for the sesquicentennial celebration, presenting it in drama form that included performers from every corner of Hill County. Jack and Verda enjoyed traveling and toured a large part of the world, making friends everywhere they went. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro and Alpha Chi Honor Society. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, and two brothers. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Verda Smith of Hillsboro; children, Darlene Peters and husband, Ken, of Joshua and Kevin Smith and wife, Jody, of Palestine; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews, along with many dear friends.
