James W. ?Jay? Dyer, 76, Whitney died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Providence Health Care Center in Waco. Jay was born December 10, 1930 in Lecompte, Louisiana, where he grew up, the son of Wilburn ?Cap? and Margaret ?Maa? Guy Dyer. After graduating from Lecompte High School, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, California. In 1955 he entered the United States Coast Guard. During his 32 year military career, he served on the ship ?Voice of America,? helped write the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery as the Coast Guard Representative, and served as a recruiter for many years. His last duty tour was on the West Coast where he retired in 1980. After his retirement, he ran the Auto Hobby Shop on Two Rocks Coast Guard Base in California. On June 15, 1994 he married Johnnie Nash in Whitney, Texas. Restoring vintage antique cars had been a hobby of Jay?s since he was a boy. Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Nash Dyer of Whitney, Texas; four daughters, Elizabeth Dyer Montgomery of Batavia, Ohio, Peggy Lou Davis of Southgate, Kentucky, Joni Jae Rangel and husband, Robert, of Morgan Hill, California, and Jamie Lynn Simms of Batavia, Ohio; four step-children, Paul Scott Bissing and wife, Janice, of Whitney, Texas, Patricia Bissing of Euless, Texas, Robin B. Peters and husband, Edward E., of Whitney, Texas, and James S. Bissing and wife, Rexann, of Whitney, Texas; grandchildren, Katie Louise Dyer Montgomery, Burke James Montgomery, Angelina Louise Struck, Julia Jae Rangel, Ella Marie Rangel, Robert Rangel, Jr., Brandon James Simms, and Brianna Lynn Ferguson; step-grandchildren, Amy L. Winkler, April Norris, Lacey Bissing, Jessica A. Peters Davis, Ericha Peters, Alissa B. Peters, Blake S. Bissing, Nella A. Bissing, and Grace E. Bissing; step-great-grandchildren, Taylor Landrum, Tate Winkler, Teagan Winkler, Nolan Norris, Owen L. Hulcy, Braxton Gossett, and Laynie A. Davis; and his two pets, Dog and Doo. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
