James Edward Flanery

James Edward Flanery, 93, of Blum, passed away on June 18, 2020, in Crowley.   A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 22, 2020, at 10:00 AM, at Pleasant View (Jawbone) Cemetery near Blum with Rev. Ken Coleman officiating.   A visitation will be from 5 – 7 PM on Sunday evening at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.

James was born on November 29, 1926, in Vernon, Texas, to Henry and Beatrice (Wade) Flanery and grew up in the Pleasant View community of Hill County, Texas.  He served his country in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946 in Japan during World War II as a cook.   On August 11, 1954, he married Patsy Conditt and she preceded him in death on December 5, 2014.

For over 50 years, James worked as a meat cutter at Safeway, Thrift Mart, Appletree, and Brookshires as well as working part time as a meat cutter at Golden Corral.   An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling to Colorado to fish in the mountains.    He was also an excellent gardener and loved tending his garden.   He especially loved raising and tending his cattle.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Waylon Flanery.

Survivors include his children, Charman Flanery, Jeff Flanery and wife Denise, and Leah Flanery; one grandson, Trent Flanery; and nieces, Elaine Collins and Rena Elmore.
