James Mayo, 77, of Hillsboro died, Friday, September 15, 2006, at his residence. James was born August 4, 1929 in Alto, Texas the son of George and Mary Cathey Mayo. He grew up in the Fort Graham area of Whitney. From 1947 to 1949 he served in the United States Air Force. On June 4, 1949 he married Lillian Sherrill in Whitney. He worked for Convair for a few years before working for General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge #196, Hillsboro V.F.W. Post #4855, and was a Baptist. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Ralph Mayo. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Mayo of Hillsboro; daughters, Betty Degner and Sharon K. Mayo both of Hillsboro; brothers, Leonard Mayo of San Antonio and Billy Mayo of Palmer; sisters, Dorothy Moore of Burleson, Nell Walthall of Fort Worth, Nettie Ruth Mayo of Lubbock, and Joyce Bowers of Hillsboro; granddaughter, Amy Degner Butcher and husband, Steve; and two great-granddaughters, Alyssa & Skylar Butcher.
