Janice Orene “Memaw” Hawkins, age 87, went home to be with Jesus on September 30th, 2023. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 6, 2023, at Marshall and Marshall. A burial will follow at Yates Cemetery.
Janice was born on June 6, 1936, in Newport, Arkansas to Kenneth and Lorene Cash. After graduating high school, she married Melvin McKay and the couple migrated south to East Texas to raise their family. She worked for Kroger Grocers for 20 years as a Deli Manager. In 1990, she moved to Whitney to be closer to her children and grandchildren that lived there. After moving to Whitney, she became a Certified Dietician and worked at both the Whitney Memorial Hospital and Park Plaza nursing home, where she made life-long friends with many co-workers. She was an avid football fan. Whether it be her grandsons, great-grandsons, or The Cowboys, she loved watching football. She loved the lake and enjoyed many days there with family and friends. Many days you would find her, and her beloved dog Beau piled up in her recliner watching TV. Classic game shows, soap operas, old westerns and Yellowstone were their favorites. Although Beau didn’t care much as long as he was in her lap. Memaw loved to spoil those that she loved and that included Beau and his partner in crime Bear. She knew her way around the kitchen and that the way too many hearts is through their stomach. She truly loved taking care of people, in whatever way they may need.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenneth Cash Jr.; sister, Pat Goldman; daughter, Judith Ann Price; grandson, Bobby Hightower; grandson, Brandon Hightower and Johnny Huggins; niece Janet Turner; and great nephew, Brian Young.
She is survived by her daughter Rebecca Rankin and husband Tim of Lawn, Texas; son Marty McKay and wife Rhonda of Whitney; grandchildren, Chad Price and wife Regina of Grandview, Donald “Putter” Price and wife Becca, Belinda Huggins, Brandy Hightower and Derrek Escobedo, Deanna Hightower, Krissi Hightower, Brenda Bright, and Christy Lindeman all of Whitney; Tara Lockhart and husband Ryan of Arlington. 21 Great Grandchildren: Payton, Braden, Shady, Angel, J.T, Kati, Johnathan, Jacob, Dillon, Bailee, Dawson, Gage, Kena, Zack, Leslie, Brianna, Laiten, Logun, Holden, Gentry, and Landry; 10 Great-Great Grandchildren. Arkansas family: niece Nancy Young and husband Tuffy of Tuckerman; niece Sandy Goldman of Remmel, niece Leann Sutterfield of Newport; nephew Douglas Cash of Newport; nephew Danny Cash and wife Jackie of Brandon Florida and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
