Janie M. Torres Augustine, 52, of Omaha, NE passed away Thursday, October 17, 2013, in Omaha. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Robyn Young officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the funeral home.

Janie was born December 3, 1960 in San Diego, CA to Gus and Josephine (Ramirez) Torres. She grew up in Columbia, MO and graduated from Hickman High School in 1979. She went on to attend the University of Missouri. In 1978, she began her federal employee career with the General Services Administration - Public Building Service (GSA/PBS) in Omaha as a part-time summer aid. For the next 35 years, Janie would hold many positions with GSA/PBS and at the time of her death was a Budget Analyst. In April 2008, Janie was nominated and won the award for the Omaha-Lincoln Federal Executive Association Employee of The Year in the administrative/technical category. Janie was recognized for her diligent oversight of the General Services Administration-Nebraska Field Office credit card program, organization of billing files, overseeing administrative functions including timekeeping and travel system, managing the security clearance processing program, and assuming procurement duties when that position was vacated in late summer of 2007.

She also served on the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) as a canvasser, represented GSA as the Heart of the Midlands Local Federal Coordinating Committee member from 2004-2006, assisted with the annual Salvation Army Angel Tree campaign for 13 years, was an Active Federal Executive Association member for over 4 years, assisted the United States Post Office with their annual food drives for 8 years, and donated blood to the American Red Cross for over 8 years until her health precluded her from further donations.

In her spare time, Janie enjoyed reading horror stories, watching the Star Trek tv-series and movies, working Sudoku puzzles and playing the piano. She especially loved cats, especially the Maine Coon breed and her current beloved pet, Cece.

Preceding her in death were her father, Gus Torres, and grandparents, Lorenzo and Juanita Ramirez.

Survivors include her mother, Josephine Torres of Hillsboro; sister, Carmen Torres of San Diego, CA; nephews, Kyle and Joseph Kennedy, both of San Diego, CA; aunts, Margaret R. Gonzales, Emily R. Reyes, and Naomi R. Gonzales; uncles, Joe and Steve Ramirez; and many cousins and friends.
