Jewel Burton

Jewel Daniel Burton, 98, of Whitney passed away Monday evening January 16, 2017, at Providence Health Care Center in Waco. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Abiding Life Church in Whitney with Rev. Curtis McGeehee officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.

Jewel was born July 13, 1918, in the Lovelace Community to Guy Eugene and Angie Elizabeth (Padgett) Daniel. She attended Lovelace School thru 10th grade before graduating from Itasca High School. She went on to attend Southwestern Assemblies of God in Waxahachie and Draughon’s Business College in Lubbock. On December 10, 1941, she was united in marriage to Rev. Guy R. Burton in Hillsboro. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1993. For over 30 years, Jewel worked at the courthouse in Hillsboro, spending 5 ½ of those years in the tax office and 24 as County Treasurer.

Church was Jewel’s life. She was a member of Abiding Life Church in Whitney, where she taught Sunday school well into her 80's and filled in as preacher into her 90's. When she was not busy with church, Jewel enjoyed doing ceramics.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; two daughters, Anne Burton and Mary Lou Price; two sisters; and a brother.

Survivors include her children, Steve Burton of Whitney, Barbara Blalock and husband, Larry, of Bedford, Dan Burton of Whitney, Pat Hoelscher and husband, Albert, of Austin, and David Burton of Whitney; sister-in-law, Gene Burton of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and seven God-children.
