Jimmy Box

Jimmy Box, 78 of Whitney passed away on February 24, 2011 in Whitney.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Whitney. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney.

Jimmy was born on November 11, 1932 in Johnson City, Texas. He was the son of A. P. and Birdie (Bryan) Box. He grew up in Llano and graduated from Llano High School. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture Education and received a Masters Degree in Agriculture Education from Tarleton State University.

On October 12, 1957 he married Virginia Morgan. Jimmy served both in the United States Army and the National Guard from 1958- 1963. He started teaching Ag in Bynum in 1955 and then started his teaching career at Whitney High School in 1962 and retired in 1990 after 35 years of teaching Ag education.

During his career he received many personal awards and his students received many local, county and state awards. He helped start the Grace Foundation Scholarship and in 1983 they changed it to the Jimmy Box Scholarship Fund. He led the pilot program of parks and recreation taught at the high school education level.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Whitney where he was also a deacon. He was also a member of the Lions Club since 1962 and the Whitney Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mason Box and 2 grandchildren, Caroline and Evan Campbell.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Whitney; son, Barry Box and wife Kristen of Whitney; daughter, Gay Campbell and husband Scott of Flower Mound; sister, Nell Liberda of Kingwood; grandchildren, Ian and Emma Campbell.
