Joan Brown Kellum, 72, of Valley Mills, Texas passed away Saturday evening, September 21, 2013 in Temple. Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 25, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. R. C. Kelly of Riverside Baptist Church in Meridian officiating.
Born in Hillsboro on April 24, 1941, Joan was the daughter of Robert L. and Juanita (Tomlinson) Brown. She grew up in Penelope, where she graduated high school in 1959 as class valedictorian. Not long after, she married Billy Joe Kellum on February 12, 1960 in Penelope.
Following her wedding, she continued her education in Waco completing 4C Business College. For several years, Joan put her career aside to care for the couple’s growing family. Later she attended nursing school while living in Valley Mills and became a licensed vocational nurse in 1975. She worked at the Clifton Medical Clinic for Dr. Don Gloff until her retirement in 1993.
Following her working years, she was a devoted grandmother, helping to take care of her grandchildren. During her leisure time, she loved to crochet and sold many of her works in craft booths. Joan was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Valley Mills. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Billy Joe Kellum of Valley Mills; two children, Michele Garza of Meridian and Keith Kellum and wife, Kellie of Valley Mills; three grandchildren, Gabrielle and Garrett Garza of Meridian and Kolton Kellum of Valley Mills; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and extended family.
