Joan Sutton

Joan Sutton, 85, of Hillsboro, passed away at Town Hall Estates on Friday, July 1, 2016. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Marshall & Marshall Chapel in Hillsboro, with Larry Schneider presiding. Preceding the funeral service, a visitation will be held at Marshall & Marshall from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Frost Cemetery in Frost.

Joan was born June 11, 1931 to D. D. and Bessie Myrtle (Harrington) Malone in Frost. The family later moved to Hillsboro, where she was raised. She attended a one-room country school house in Arnottville, near Mayfield, which taught grades 1 - 12. After finishing school at Hillsboro High School, and attending a business college in Waco, Joan moved to Dallas where she met and married the love of her life, Bill Sutton. She and a friend had a flat tire; Bill and a friend of his stopped to change the tire for them. He left the scene saying, “I’m gonna marry that girl someday”-- and that he did! The couple had one daughter, Phyllis Kay (Sutton) Gibson, and they were later blessed with one grandson, Phillip Key.

Joan began her career at Mercantile Bank in Dallas, and at the H. D. Lee Company, working as an Administrative Bookkeeper in the petroleum industry. Joan and Bill then went into business for themselves by opening a service station. They owned a car wash and a used car business; they then moved on to the cattle business where Joan worked side by side with her beloved husband, Bill, throughout the years. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently, and also celebrated Joan’s 85th birthday on June 11.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Jacky and Billy Malone. She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughter, Phyllis Gibson and husband, Roy; and grandson, Phillip Key.
