Joe Lee “JL” Adams, age 93, of Hillsboro went to be with his Lord Sunday evening, March 5, 2017. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2017, at Ward Branch Cemetery in Glen Rose with Rev. Eddie Booth officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to Noon Thursday at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro prior to the graveside service.
Joe was born August 31, 1923 in Glen Rose. He was the oldest of three boys born to James E. Adams and Ruthie Pace.
In 1940, he married Lorene Wylie and they had a daughter, Charlene, born in 1942. That marriage dissolved and he later married Nita Hollar. They were married over 50 years before she passed away in 2010.
He honorably served our country in Company C, 62nd Armored Infantry Battalion, 14th Armored Division, all through Europe during World War II, earning the Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and several other medals. He was a proud 32nd degree Mason, with over 50 years as a member of Lodge #582.
Joe retired as a supervisor from Owens Corning.
Joe lived a fascinating life filled with many interests and loving people. Among the many pleasures he had in life, music, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors brought him the most enjoyment. Of all the talents and amazing skills that Joe possessed, the ability to play the guitar and piano without a single lesson was his greatest. He adored music and loved playing and singing the “old country” music songs. He was so musically inclined, he even had a side job tuning pianos.
The later years of his life were spent in the quiet country town of Thackerville, OK, until health issues brought him to live with his daughter in Hillsboro and eventually to Town Hall Estates.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the caring staff at Town Hall, Providence Hospice, Dr. Bauerschlag, and Dr. Seely for making his final years comfortable.
Family and friends left behind to cherish Joe memory, will remember him fondly with loving memories of a strong, charismatic man who lived his life to the fullest.
Also preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Roy and J. C. Adams.
Survivors include his daughter, Charlene Glass and husband, Charlie, of Peoria; two grandchildren Randy Overton and wife, Carolyn, of Waxahachie and Yolanda Overton of Peoria; although not a direct descendent, James Pippin “Two-Gun” of Hayward, CA, grew to be the “honorary” son that Joe never had; two great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; three step-grandsons; five step-great grandchildren; six step-great-great grandchildren; and other extended family including a special nephew and niece, Wayne and Sandy Hollar of Aubrey.
Joe was also blessed to have loyal friends that he considered to be family and those included longtime friends, Jessie and Paula Flores and their family of Allen and Betty Beasley and her family of Fort Worth.
Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice, P. O. Box 2081, Whitney, TX 76692.
