Joe W. Collier, 84, of Whitney passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, in an Arlington hospital. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hillsboro with Father Ouseph I. Thekkumthala and Deacon Denver Crawley officiating.
Joe was born June 23, 1928 in Linden to Marvin Jackson and Edna Lena (Moulton) Collier. During the Korean War, he served his country in the United States Army. For over 30 years, Joe was employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as an engineer. On December 20, 1964, he married Ann Leyh in Arlington and she preceded him in death on April 21, 2012. The couple lived in Arlington before moving to Whitney in the early 1990's.
Avid travelers, Joe and Ann traveled all over the world including 30 countries. They belonged to two different R.V. groups and spent many summers in the Burro Mountains in New Mexico. The couple also enjoyed going on cruises and had taken 30 of them over the years.
Active in the McCown Valley Association, he was also a volunteer with the Salvation Army. Joe was a very faithful and active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hillsboro and the Knights of Columbus Council #10375. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed playing bingo and dominos.
Also preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include his daughter, Danette Dunlap and fiancé, Lloyd Jorgenson, of Abilene; sister, Annette Gibaud and husband, Donald of Arlington; two grandsons, Jamie Dunlap of Abilene and Daniel Dunlap of Throckmorton; two brothers-in-law, Norman Leyh and wife, Mary, of Arlington and Herman Leyh of Dripping Springs; three nephews, Robert G. Ward and wife, Ginger, of North Richland Hills, Charles F. Ward and wife, Diana, of Longview, and Jim Gibaud and wife, Lisa, of Virginia Beach, VA; three nieces, Angela S. Wright and husband, David, of Dallas, Pamela R. Ward of Tampa, FL, and LeDonna Dill and husband, Charles, of Richland Hills; and best friends, Mickey and JoNell Michaud and Alex and Linda Zuran all of Whitney.
